Yes, the hallway is, in fact, stretching.  This does more than simply ready its muscles for the task ahead.  It is also a mental preparation for the task ahead.

What that meant was anybody's guess.  The fist's voice echoed through my head, but nothing stuck.  It was incomprehensible, a mishmash of vague hints, but no leads.  What the hallway was preparing for was as dark and mysterious as the ending of The Usual Suspects, enigmatic and raising far more questions than it could ever hope to answer.
